Dental direct mail in Carlsbad:
a new patient plan for dentists
By Best Direct Mail, San Marcos · Numbers from USPS and the US Census Bureau
Carlsbad has four ZIP Codes, and each was built in a different era. The Village and Olde Carlsbad are the oldest, with beach cottages, condos and long-time residents. La Costa grew up around its resort and golf courses from the 1960s on. Aviara, Bressi Ranch and Robertson Ranch are master-planned communities full of families who moved in from somewhere else. Every one of those groups chooses a dentist for different reasons.
So a Carlsbad practice does best with a few different postcards, each mailed where it fits. Below we start with the public numbers for each ZIP Code, including how many new movers arrive in an average month, then go neighborhood by neighborhood: who lives there, which services fit and how to mail them. After that come a new movers plan, a year of mailings and what every dental postcard in California should include.

Carlsbad by ZIP Code
| ZIP Code | Homes (routes) | Households with children | Median household income | New movers a month (average) | Residents 65 or older |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 92008 Carlsbad Village, the Barrio and Olde Carlsbad | 12,731 (21) | 22% | $104,995 | about 196 | 19% |
| 92009 La Costa, Rancho Carrillo and Bressi Ranch | 16,715 (27) | 35% | $164,182 | about 135 | 18% |
| 92010 Calavera Hills and Robertson Ranch | 7,412 (10) | 35% | $129,926 | about 100 | 16% |
| 92011 Aviara and Poinsettia | 10,221 (14) | 30% | $159,235 | about 92 | 21% |
What the columns tell you:
- Households with children: where a family practice, children's checkups and back-to-school cards will do best.
- Median household income: higher incomes point to cosmetic work, aligners and implants. Lower incomes point to clear prices, payment plans and the insurance you take.
- New movers a month: about how many households move to a new home in the ZIP Code in an average month. This is the size of your monthly new movers mailing.
- Residents 65 or older: where implant, denture and consultation cards belong.
These figures cover whole ZIP Codes, and single routes inside them can be quite different. Our EDDM® route planner shows income, age, household size and the share of families with children for every route before you choose.
Homes and carrier routes are from the USPS EDDM® route map. Households with children, income, new movers and residents 65 or older are US Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates for the ZIP Code area. New movers a month is the number of residents who moved into a different home in the past year, turned into households and divided by 12.
New movers: on average about 520 households move to a new home in these ZIP Codes every month. Many of them will be looking for a new dentist.
What a mailing costs: $2,682 for 5,000 homes with our recommended 8.5 × 11 EDDM® postcard, including printing and postage. See our EDDM® prices for other quantities.
What to mail in each neighborhood
Carlsbad Village, the Barrio and Olde Carlsbad (92008)
West of the freeway, the Village mixes beach cottages, condos and new townhomes near the train station, with many renters and young adults who walk to the beach and the restaurants. Just south is the Barrio, the city's first neighborhood, and east of the freeway Olde Carlsbad has mid-century ranch homes where many owners have lived for decades. It is a mix, so the card depends on the streets.
- What to offer: near the Village, a simple new patient price, whitening and online booking. In Olde Carlsbad, crowns, implants and a dentist people can stay with for years.
- How to mail: new movers every month for the Village condos and rentals, where people come and go. EDDM® on the Olde Carlsbad routes that are mostly single-family homes.

La Costa (92009)
The older La Costa tracts and condos around the resort and golf courses date from the 1970s and 80s, and many of the people who bought them early are now retired. Farther east, La Costa Oaks and La Costa Valley are newer and full of families. The west side is where implant and denture cards do their best work.
- What to offer: implants, dentures, crowns and a free consultation, plus whether you accept Medicare Advantage dental plans. Clear, large type and a phone number to call.
- Timing: September, before the holidays and the year-end benefits rush.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the older tracts, or a list filtered by age to reach older adults across the whole ZIP Code without the young family streets to the east.

Aviara and Poinsettia (92011)
Aviara was built from 1989 around its golf course and resort above Batiquitos Lagoon, with large homes in gated and HOA neighborhoods. Poinsettia, between Aviara and the coast, has 1990s and 2000s family tracts, condos and townhomes. Incomes here tend to be high, and many residents are willing to pay for the smile they want.
- What to offer: whitening, veneers, aligners and implants, with a free consultation. Before and after photos of your own patients, used with permission, sell cosmetic work best.
- Timing: March and April, before weddings, graduations and summer photos.
- How to mail: EDDM®. Most homes are owner-occupied and many dentists mail here, so a well-designed card mailed several times a year wins over a single drop.

Bressi Ranch and Rancho Carrillo (92009)
Bressi Ranch, planned in the early 2000s with its own village center and business park, and Rancho Carrillo, near Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, are master-planned communities of family homes. Most households have children at home or in school, and most parents have dental insurance through work.
- What to offer: one practice for the whole family, children's checkups and sealants, and aligners or whitening for the parents. Early morning, evening and Saturday appointments matter.
- Timing: back-to-school checkups in July and August, and "use your benefits before they reset" in October and November.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the residential routes. Each community is compact, so a few routes cover it.

Calavera Hills and Robertson Ranch (92010)
In northeast Carlsbad, Calavera Hills has family homes, condos and townhomes from the late 1980s on, near Lake Calavera and its trails. Next to it, Robertson Ranch is one of the city's newest neighborhoods, with many young families who arrived in the last few years and are still settling in.
- What to offer: a family new patient offer, children seen from their first tooth, and the insurance plans you accept, listed clearly.
- How to mail: EDDM® in the single-family tracts, plus new movers every month. In a neighborhood this new, many families are still looking for a dentist.

New movers in Carlsbad: a monthly mailing
Moving is one of the main reasons people change dentists. In Carlsbad that happens every month, in the new homes of Robertson Ranch, in the Village condos and in families relocating for work at the business parks near Palomar Airport. The table above shows about how many households move to a new home in each ZIP Code in an average month.
- Choose the area: the new movers within a few miles of your office, usually your part of Carlsbad plus the nearest parts of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos or Encinitas.
- Mail every month: each card reaches people within their first weeks in a new home, while they are still choosing.
- Make it a welcome: "Welcome to Carlsbad" with your new patient offer, the insurance you take and how to book.

EDDM® or a mailing list in Carlsbad?
It depends on how many of the homes on a route could become your patients:
- EDDM® for the neighborhoods around your office. In Aviara, Bressi Ranch, Rancho Carrillo, the La Costa tracts and Calavera Hills, nearly every home is a household that needs a dentist. EDDM® reaches them all at the lowest cost per card.
- A mailing list for a narrower service. Implants fit the older La Costa and Olde Carlsbad streets, cosmetic work fits the higher-income routes. A list filtered by age, income or children reaches them across the city without paying for every home in between.
- New movers every month, on top of either one, especially for the Village and the newest neighborhoods.
A year of dental mailings in Carlsbad
| When | Who gets it | What the card says |
|---|---|---|
| Every month | New movers around your office | Welcome to the neighborhood, with your new patient offer, the insurance you take and your hours |
| January to February | The neighborhoods closest to your office | New year, new dental benefits: book your cleaning and exam |
| March to April | Higher-income neighborhoods | Whitening and cosmetic work before spring weddings, graduations and summer photos |
| July to August | Family neighborhoods | Back-to-school checkups and sealants for kids |
| September | Neighborhoods with many older residents | Implants, dentures and a free consultation |
| October to November | Your own patients, then the nearby neighborhoods | Use your dental benefits before they reset on January 1 |
You don't need every mailing. Most Carlsbad practices start with the monthly new movers card and one neighborhood mailing, then add the others once they see which brings in patients. Our dental direct mail guide has more offer ideas for each one.

What every Carlsbad dental postcard should include
- The dentist or practice name, so it is clear who is offering the service. Dental advertising in California must not be false or misleading.
- "Specialist" only for real specialists. An orthodontist or oral surgeon can say so. A general dentist who offers implants or aligners should describe the service without suggesting a specialty.
- Offers spelled out: what a new patient special includes, who it is for (new patients only, patients without insurance) and when it ends.
- No waived co-pays or deductibles as an offer. That can break dental plan contracts and insurance rules.
- The plans you accept, including Medi-Cal Dental if you take it. For many families it is the first thing they check.
- Where you are in Carlsbad, with a landmark people know, your hours and whether you see children, evenings or Saturdays.
These are general points, not legal advice. Your dental association or a healthcare attorney can confirm the exact wording of your offer, and we adjust any design to match.

Frequently asked questions
How many new movers are there in Carlsbad each month?
The table above shows about how many households move to a new home in each Carlsbad ZIP Code in an average month, from US Census Bureau estimates. It is a good guide to the size of a monthly new movers mailing. The exact count for the area around your office is in our mailing list planner.
Where should a family dentist mail in Carlsbad?
Start with the routes closest to your office, then the family neighborhoods in the table: the ZIP Codes with the most households with children. Bressi Ranch, Rancho Carrillo, Calavera Hills and Robertson Ranch are the easiest to reach by EDDM®, because most homes there are families.
Where should I mail implant and denture postcards in Carlsbad?
The older tracts and condos of west La Costa and the streets of Olde Carlsbad have many long-time, older residents. Mail them by EDDM®, or use a mailing list filtered by age to reach older adults anywhere in the city.
Should I mail the business parks near Palomar Airport?
If your office is close to them, it can work. EDDM® can include business addresses, and people who work nearby often want a dentist they can visit before work or at lunch. Mention early or lunchtime appointments and the insurance plans you accept.
Do you serve Carlsbad?
Yes. Our print shop is in San Marcos, about 15 minutes from Carlsbad, and we print and mail for dental practices across San Diego County. We take EDDM® mailings to the Post Offices that deliver your Carlsbad routes.
