Dental direct mail in Clairemont:
a new patient plan for dentists
By Best Direct Mail, San Marcos · Numbers from USPS and the US Census Bureau
Clairemont is part of the City of San Diego, and its main ZIP Code is 92117. It was San Diego's largest post-war subdivision, built from 1950 on as thousands of single-story homes across the mesas between Mission Bay and the canyons. Seventy years later, some of the first families are still here and need implants and dentures, while young families, renters in the apartments along the busy streets and people in new ADUs behind the houses are looking for a dentist close to home.
One ZIP Code, but several kinds of patients. Below we start with the public numbers for 92117, including how many new movers arrive in an average month, then go neighborhood by neighborhood: who lives there, which services fit and how to mail them. After that come a new movers plan, a year of mailings and what every dental postcard in California should include.

Clairemont by ZIP Code
| ZIP Code | Homes (routes) | Households with children | Median household income | New movers a month (average) | Residents 65 or older |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 92117 Most of Clairemont, including North Clairemont, Clairemont Mesa, Bay Ho and part of Bay Park | 21,371 (40) | 24% | $103,661 | about 192 | 18% |
What the columns tell you:
- Households with children: where a family practice, children's checkups and back-to-school cards will do best.
- Median household income: higher incomes point to cosmetic work, aligners and implants. Lower incomes point to clear prices, payment plans and the insurance you take.
- New movers a month: about how many households move to a new home in the ZIP Code in an average month. This is the size of your monthly new movers mailing.
- Residents 65 or older: where implant, denture and consultation cards belong.
These figures cover whole ZIP Codes, and single routes inside them can be quite different. Our EDDM® route planner shows income, age, household size and the share of families with children for every route before you choose.
Homes and carrier routes are from the USPS EDDM® route map. Households with children, income, new movers and residents 65 or older are US Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates for the ZIP Code area. New movers a month is the number of residents who moved into a different home in the past year, turned into households and divided by 12.
New movers: on average about 190 households move to a new home in these ZIP Codes every month. Many of them will be looking for a new dentist.
What a mailing costs: $2,682 for 5,000 homes with our recommended 8.5 × 11 EDDM® postcard, including printing and postage. See our EDDM® prices for other quantities.
What to mail in each neighborhood
North Clairemont (92117)
North Clairemont is street after street of 1950s and 60s ranch homes, many of them from the same few floor plans. Many residents have lived here for decades and are now retired, next to younger families who bought in more recently. Long-time residents tend to keep their dentist, so a new practice wins them with a service they need now.
- What to offer: implants, dentures and repairs, a free consultation, and whether you accept Medicare Advantage dental plans. Large, easy-to-read type and a phone number to call.
- Timing: September for the implant card, and back-to-school in July and August for the younger families on the same streets.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the single-family routes, or a list filtered by age if you only want the implant card to reach older residents.

Clairemont Mesa East and West (92117)
The tract streets of Clairemont Mesa fill the middle of the community around Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Genesee Avenue, near Clairemont Town Square and the neighborhood schools. Many families with children live here, in the original houses and in homes with an ADU added in back.
- What to offer: one practice for the whole family, children's checkups and sealants, and the insurance plans you accept. Evening and Saturday hours matter to working parents.
- Timing: back-to-school checkups in July and August, and "use your benefits before they reset" in October and November.
- How to mail: EDDM® to the routes closest to your office. Families pick a dentist they can reach in a few minutes, and ADU tenants on the same route need one too.

The apartment corridors (92117)
Along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, Genesee Avenue, Balboa Avenue and Clairemont Drive, apartment buildings and duplexes sit next to the shopping centers. Many residents are young adults and renters who move in and out often, including students and people working in Kearny Mesa and University City.
- What to offer: a simple new patient price, whitening and online booking. A card that is quick to read and easy to act on from a phone works best.
- How to mail: new movers every month, rather than whole routes. With so many people coming and going, the people who just arrived are the ones looking for a dentist.

Bay Ho and the Tecolote Canyon rim (92117)
Tecolote Canyon Natural Park runs through the middle of Clairemont. Along its rim and in Bay Ho, homes have canyon or bay views, quiet streets and many remodels, and households tend to have higher incomes than in the rest of the community.
- What to offer: whitening, veneers, aligners and implants, with a free consultation. Before and after photos of your own patients, used with permission, sell these services best.
- How to mail: a list filtered by household income, since the rim streets cut across several routes. EDDM® works where a whole route sits along the canyon.

Bay Park and the trolley stations (92117)
Bay Park climbs the hill above Morena Boulevard, with views of Mission Bay. Since 2021 the Blue Line trolley has stopped at Tecolote Road, Clairemont Drive and Balboa Avenue, and new apartments near the stations bring young professionals who commute. Bay Park is split between 92117 and 92110, so check the ZIP Code of each street before you mail.
- What to offer: modern technology, gentle care and early or evening appointments around a commute. Whitening and aligners for young professionals, implants for long-time owners on the view streets.
- How to mail: new movers every month near the trolley, and EDDM® on the single-family routes up the hill.

New movers in Clairemont: a monthly mailing
Moving is one of the main reasons people change dentists. In Clairemont that happens every month, in the apartments along the corridors, in new ADUs and in the homes young families buy from long-time owners. The table above shows about how many households move to a new home in 92117 in an average month.
- Choose the area: the new movers within a few miles of your office, usually Clairemont plus the nearest parts of Bay Park, Linda Vista, Kearny Mesa and Pacific Beach.
- Mail every month: each card reaches people within their first weeks in a new home, while they are still choosing.
- Make it a welcome: "Welcome to Clairemont" with your new patient offer, the insurance you take and how to book.

EDDM® or a mailing list in Clairemont?
It depends on how many of the homes on a route could become your patients:
- EDDM® for the neighborhoods around your office. Almost every household needs a dentist, so for a general or family practice the homes nearby are possible patients, renters and ADU tenants included. EDDM® reaches them all at the lowest cost per card.
- A mailing list for a narrower service. Implants fit the long-time residents of North Clairemont, cosmetic work fits the canyon rim and Bay Ho. A list filtered by age, income or children reaches them without paying for every home in between.
- New movers every month, on top of either one.
A year of dental mailings in Clairemont
| When | Who gets it | What the card says |
|---|---|---|
| Every month | New movers around your office | Welcome to the neighborhood, with your new patient offer, the insurance you take and your hours |
| January to February | The neighborhoods closest to your office | New year, new dental benefits: book your cleaning and exam |
| March to April | Higher-income neighborhoods | Whitening and cosmetic work before spring weddings, graduations and summer photos |
| July to August | Family neighborhoods | Back-to-school checkups and sealants for kids |
| September | Neighborhoods with many older residents | Implants, dentures and a free consultation |
| October to November | Your own patients, then the nearby neighborhoods | Use your dental benefits before they reset on January 1 |
You don't need every mailing. Most Clairemont practices start with the monthly new movers card and one neighborhood mailing, then add the others once they see which brings in patients. Our dental direct mail guide has more offer ideas for each one.

What every Clairemont dental postcard should include
- The dentist or practice name, so it is clear who is offering the service. Dental advertising in California must not be false or misleading.
- "Specialist" only for real specialists. An orthodontist or oral surgeon can say so. A general dentist who offers implants or aligners should describe the service without suggesting a specialty.
- Offers spelled out: what a new patient special includes, who it is for (new patients only, patients without insurance) and when it ends.
- No waived co-pays or deductibles as an offer. That can break dental plan contracts and insurance rules.
- The plans you accept, including Medi-Cal Dental if you take it. For many families it is the first thing they check.
- Where you are in Clairemont, with a landmark people know, your hours and whether you see children, evenings or Saturdays.
These are general points, not legal advice. Your dental association or a healthcare attorney can confirm the exact wording of your offer, and we adjust any design to match.
