Dental direct mail in Coronado:
a new patient plan for dentists
By Best Direct Mail, San Marcos · Numbers from USPS and the US Census Bureau
Coronado is small, close-knit and expensive, and most residents would rather see a dentist on the island than cross the bridge. It holds several very different groups of patients in one ZIP Code: families in the Village with children at the local schools, Navy families from Naval Air Station North Island and the Naval Amphibious Base who arrive and leave on orders, retirees in the towers of Coronado Shores, and second-home owners who are here only part of the year.
Residents here judge a practice by the quality of its card, so a Coronado mailing is smaller, better designed and more targeted than most. Below we start with the public numbers for 92118, including how many new movers arrive in an average month, then go neighborhood by neighborhood: who lives there, which services fit and how to mail them. After that come a new movers plan, a year of mailings and what every dental postcard in California should include.

Coronado by ZIP Code
| ZIP Code | Homes (routes) | Households with children | Median household income | New movers a month (average) | Residents 65 or older |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 92118 All of Coronado: the Village, Coronado Shores and the Coronado Cays | 9,277 (15) | 26% | $134,534 | about 145 | 22% |
What the columns tell you:
- Households with children: where a family practice, children's checkups and back-to-school cards will do best.
- Median household income: higher incomes point to cosmetic work, aligners and implants. Lower incomes point to clear prices, payment plans and the insurance you take.
- New movers a month: about how many households move to a new home in the ZIP Code in an average month. This is the size of your monthly new movers mailing.
- Residents 65 or older: where implant, denture and consultation cards belong.
These figures cover whole ZIP Codes, and single routes inside them can be quite different. Our EDDM® route planner shows income, age, household size and the share of families with children for every route before you choose.
Homes and carrier routes are from the USPS EDDM® route map. Households with children, income, new movers and residents 65 or older are US Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates for the ZIP Code area. New movers a month is the number of residents who moved into a different home in the past year, turned into households and divided by 12.
New movers: on average about 150 households move to a new home in these ZIP Codes every month. Many of them will be looking for a new dentist.
What a mailing costs: $2,682 for 5,000 homes with our recommended 8.5 × 11 EDDM® postcard, including printing and postage. See our EDDM® prices for other quantities.
What to mail in each neighborhood
The Village (92118)
The grid of streets from the ferry landing to the Hotel del Coronado has Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival homes and beach cottages next to newer homes and condos. Families who have been here for generations live next to Navy families renting for a tour, and children walk or bike to school along Orange Avenue.
- What to offer: one practice for the whole family, children's checkups and sealants, and whether you accept the TRICARE Dental Program, which many military family members use.
- Timing: back-to-school checkups in July and August, when many Navy families have just arrived on summer orders.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the Village routes. Renters and owners both need a dentist, so whole routes reach every household you want.

Ocean Boulevard and the beach blocks (92118)
Along Ocean Boulevard and the streets just behind it are some of the most valuable homes in the county, many large and custom-built. Residents here have high incomes and high expectations, and they choose a practice on quality, comfort and discretion rather than price.
- What to offer: veneers, whitening, aligners and implants, with a private consultation. Before and after photos of your own patients, used with permission, and a calm, well-designed card.
- How to mail: a list filtered by household income, sent to owners at their own mailing address. Some homes are second homes, and the owner may live elsewhere most of the year.

Glorietta Bay and the golf course (92118)
Around Glorietta Bay, the municipal golf course and the streets toward the Silver Strand, homes are mostly single-family houses from the mid-1900s on, plus condos near the bay. Many residents have lived here a long time, and many households have grandchildren who visit often.
- What to offer: a practice for every generation: crowns and implants for the grandparents, checkups for the visiting grandchildren, and a free consultation.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the routes that are mostly houses, and a list for the condos.

Coronado Shores (92118)
South of the Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Shores is a group of ten condominium towers from the 1970s, with the beach in front. Many residents are retired, some live here full time and others only for part of the year. Older residents often keep the same dentist for years, so a new practice wins them with a service they need.
- What to offer: implants, dentures and repairs, a free consultation, and whether you accept Medicare Advantage dental plans. Large, easy-to-read type and a phone number people can call.
- Timing: September, and again in winter when part-year residents are back.
- How to mail: a list of owners at their own mailing address. Many live elsewhere part of the year, so a card sent only to the unit can sit unread.

Coronado Cays (92118)
Down the Silver Strand on the bay side, the Coronado Cays has ten residential villages, from waterfront homes with private docks to townhomes and condos. The Naval Amphibious Base is a short drive away, and families with children, active retirees and military households all live here.
- What to offer: a family practice with easy booking, and a note on how far your office is from the Cays. People here weigh the drive into the Village or across the bridge.
- How to mail: EDDM® on the routes that are mostly owner-occupied homes, and new movers every month to catch military families as they arrive.

New movers in Coronado: a monthly mailing
Moving is one of the main reasons people change dentists, and in Coronado the Navy makes it happen every month. Families arrive on new orders, especially in summer, and leave again a few years later. The table above shows about how many households move to a new home in 92118 in an average month.
- Choose the area: all of Coronado. The island is small, and new movers anywhere on it are a short drive from your office.
- Mail every month: each card reaches people within their first weeks in a new home, while they are still choosing.
- Make it a welcome: "Welcome to Coronado" with your new patient offer, the insurance you take, including TRICARE Dental if you accept it, and how to book.

EDDM® or a mailing list in Coronado?
It depends on how many of the homes on a route could become your patients:
- EDDM® for the neighborhoods where people live full time. In the Village, around Glorietta Bay and in much of the Cays, almost every household needs a dentist. EDDM® reaches them all at the lowest cost per card.
- A mailing list for second homes and narrower services. In Coronado Shores and along the beach, many owners live elsewhere part of the year. A list sent to their own mailing address, filtered by age or income for implants or cosmetic work, reaches them where they are.
- New movers every month, on top of either one, for the Navy families.
A year of dental mailings in Coronado
| When | Who gets it | What the card says |
|---|---|---|
| Every month | New movers around your office | Welcome to the neighborhood, with your new patient offer, the insurance you take and your hours |
| January to February | The neighborhoods closest to your office | New year, new dental benefits: book your cleaning and exam |
| March to April | Higher-income neighborhoods | Whitening and cosmetic work before spring weddings, graduations and summer photos |
| July to August | Family neighborhoods | Back-to-school checkups and sealants for kids |
| September | Neighborhoods with many older residents | Implants, dentures and a free consultation |
| October to November | Your own patients, then the nearby neighborhoods | Use your dental benefits before they reset on January 1 |
You don't need every mailing. Most Coronado practices start with the monthly new movers card and one neighborhood mailing, then add the others once they see which brings in patients. Our dental direct mail guide has more offer ideas for each one.

What every Coronado dental postcard should include
- The dentist or practice name, so it is clear who is offering the service. Dental advertising in California must not be false or misleading.
- "Specialist" only for real specialists. An orthodontist or oral surgeon can say so. A general dentist who offers implants or aligners should describe the service without suggesting a specialty.
- Offers spelled out: what a new patient special includes, who it is for (new patients only, patients without insurance) and when it ends.
- No waived co-pays or deductibles as an offer. That can break dental plan contracts and insurance rules.
- The plans you accept, including Medi-Cal Dental if you take it. For many families it is the first thing they check.
- Where you are in Coronado, with a landmark people know, your hours and whether you see children, evenings or Saturdays.
These are general points, not legal advice. Your dental association or a healthcare attorney can confirm the exact wording of your offer, and we adjust any design to match.
